Where does one begin a project of successfully making great wine? At the plant nursery!

When? At least 5-6 years in advance.

For the wine maker, the decision to plant a new vineyard, begins at that moment—after considered agreement with his consulting agronomist and lengthy discussion with his enologist. Then, he heads to the nursery. But, not to buy grapevines – not yet! First there is a long planning phase, requiring soil analysis, evaluation of rootstocks and different clones.

I went frequently, to find Claudio NICOLA in his vineyard nursery. I wanted to better understand this phase, which necessarily anticipates the actual planting of a vineyard.
